Halfar System: Packaging optimization leads to major plastic savings

In the context of declining resources and increasing ecological burdens, Halfar System is once again taking the initiative to save further product emissions. For over 10 years, the company has been developing its stock range in line with its sustainability strategy.

Optimized packaging, which is based on the principle of saving resources, can also contribute to an improved product footprint. Halfar System has already dispensed with unnecessary decorative packaging in the past and only ships goods in transport packaging made from recyclable materials. However, when importing goods, a certain amount of protective packaging is necessary for quality assurance purposes. It is therefore essential to have well-considered alternative solutions in place to address the omission of certain packaging elements.

In practice, the goods are removed from the import packaging before being processed at Halfar. In this way, a large proportion of the packaging waste, especially plastic waste, can be recycled at the site. This allows the raw materials to be reused. However, if the goods are dispatched without a Halfar finishing service, the company is unable to influence the subsequent fate of the transport packaging. For this reason, Halfar System has undertaken a comprehensive review of packaging optimization strategies.

In addition, any reduction in packaging that does not compromise quality is a measure that saves resources and avoids emissions throughout the entire packaging lifecycle, from production to recycling and ultimately disposal. This provides an additional incentive for the bag manufacturer to continue to devote itself to the subject of packaging.

The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the implemented measures. In the first year of the project, Halfar System was already able to stock around 70 % of the items in its stock range without separate individual plastic bags. This resulted in the saving of 20 tons of plastic packaging based on the goods that were imported in 2022. The positive effects of the project are also confirmed by the company’s 2023 waste volume balance. Despite a steady increase in business operations, the total weight of plastic waste at Halfar was reduced by more than half from 2022 to 2023.
